Experts predict that many of the jobs of 20 years from now do not yet exist. And the innovators of just the next 10 years are still in primary school now. That’s how fast the world is changing. It has huge implications for economies and the workforce of the future.

We cannot train for what we cannot foresee. But what we can do is to be flexible and have an ability to learn new things and keep ahead of machines. It therefore means getting comfortable with STEM and related disciplines.

Equally relevant, STEM majors (such as data analytics, computer and information sciences, engineering and biological sciences) on average earn about 30% to 40% more than humanities graduates (such as business, health care, social sciences and education). They are therefore also more likely to be employed and hold a single full-time job, rather than a part-time job or multiple jobs.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) shows that STEM jobs such as engineers, information specialists grew about 1.5 times the rate of other jobs in recent years. The number of people in jobs commonly held by workers with STEM qualifications grew by 14 % in recent years, compared with only 9 % growth for other jobs.

Furthermore, the jobs that showed the highest growth were design, engineering, science and transport professionals (23 %) (mainly engineers and scientists), and information professionals (19 %). For those workers with university level STEM qualifications, 75 per cent were employed in higher skill jobs such as Professionals or Managers.
